I recently decided to upgrade our home security setup by purchasing an Amazon Echo Show 5 and two Blink Outdoor cameras. I was attracted to the deal that offered the Echo Show for less than 15€ when purchased with the cameras, and after doing some research, I felt confident that this would be a great deal.

Image Quality / Night Vision

The first thing that impressed me about the Blink cameras was the picture quality. The 1080p HD resolution provides crystal clear images (at least when it is not dark outside). The first issue I’ve encountered with my Blink cameras is that the infrared (IR) lighting causes a reflection on the white exterior of my house. This makes it difficult for the camera to clearly capture footage at night, as the reflection of the IR lighting often obscures the image. As a result, I’ve had to disable the IR feature on my cameras in order to get a “clear” picture. While the IR lighting is a useful feature for improving visibility in low light conditions, it can be problematic when the camera is pointed at a surface that reflects the IR light. In my case, the white exterior of my house seems to be particularly prone to this issue.

Motion detection

The motion detection feature is extremely sensitive, sending me an alert as soon as it detects any movement in the camera’s field of view. It works well, even when you are not in your home-network. There is another aspect of the Blink cameras that I do find a bit disappointing – the lack of object recognition. While the motion detection feature is extremely sensitive and reliable, it cannot distinguish between different types of objects. This means that if the camera detects movement, it will send an alert but it won’t be able to tell me whether it was a person, a car, or an animal that triggered the alert. I’ve noticed that some other home security cameras on the market do have the ability to recognize different types of objects and provide more specific notifications. For example, some Reolink Camereas are able to send an alert that says “person detected” or “vehicle detected.” Overall, while the lack of object recognition on the Blink cameras is not a deal breaker for me, it is something that I do wish they had. It would be a nice added layer of security to be able to distinguish between different types of objects and get more specific alerts. However, the overall reliability and convenience of the cameras still make them a great value in my opinion.
Even though I’m talking all this negative stuff, the motion detection isn’t that bad in general. You can hide areas that should not react to movement. You can also adjust the length and quality of the videos, so you can often choose between quality and battery life.

Installing the Cameras

Installing the Blink cameras on the outside of my house was a breeze. I simply used hot glue to attach them to the window sills, making sure they were securely in place. The cameras are very lightweight and the hot glue held them securely, even in windy conditions. The setup process itself was also very easy. I downloaded the Blink app on my smartphone and followed the on-screen prompts to connect the cameras to my Wi-Fi network and set them up for use. The instructions were clear and easy to follow, and the entire process took just a few minutes. In general, I was really impressed with how easy it was to install the Blink cameras on the outside of my house. The hot glue method worked great for me and the setup process was quick and hassle-free. If you’re looking for a simple and effective way to add home security cameras to the outside of your home, the Blink cameras are definitely worth considering.

(Ios) App – Live View

I really enjoy using the iOS app for my Blink cameras. It’s simple and easy to use, and does exactly what it’s supposed to do. I’ve found it very convenient to be able to check in on my home at any time and see what’s happening through the live camera feeds.
One aspect of the app that I do find a bit frustrating, however, is that when a camera is capturing a motion detection event, I am unable to view the live feed. This means that if I get an alert that motion has been detected, I have to wait until the event is over before I can see what triggered the alert. While I understand that this is likely a technical limitation, it can be a bit annoying at times.
When the Live-view was available, the latency of the live transfer was fine, so you can really see who is standing in front of the door.

In addition to the live video feed and motion detection alerts, another feature of the Blink cameras that I really appreciate is the ability to talk through my phone and have the audio output through the camera. This has proven to be a really convenient and useful feature for me, especially when I’m not at home and want to communicate with someone who is in the camera’s field of view. To use this feature, all I have to do is open the Blink app on my phone, select a camera and press the “talk” button. My voice is then transmitted through the camera’s speaker, allowing me to communicate with anyone who is within range of the camera. The audio quality is good, although the volume is not particularly loud. However, this hasn’t been an issue for me even though my camera is about 4 meters away from the potential person I might want to talk to.
All recordings are displayed in a list, which shows all recordings filtered by time. The icon to the right of the preview indicates whether the recording is a motion detection or photo-capture feature. The photo capture feature lets the camera take a picture once an hour for 24 hours, so you can playback 24 hours in a short clip. This allows you to see, for example, at what time the strange car drove away from your front door, even if it is not in the motion detection area of the camera.

Echo Show 5

In addition to the security aspect, the Echo Show has proven to be a great entertainment device as well. Especially for just 15€! The 5.5-inch display is the perfect size for displaying time, your favorite pictures or just for turning on and off your smart lighting, and the sound quality is impressive for such a compact device. One feature that I particularly appreciate about the Echo Show is the ability to connect it to my home security system and control it with voice commands. I can simply ask Alexa to show me the live feed from my cameras and get a real-time update on what’s happening at home. Besides displaying the weather, the Echo Show has a variety of other useful apps and skills. I’ve been able to use it to set alarms, check the weather forecast, make a shopping list, and much more. It’s really become a central hub for my home and I find myself using it multiple times a day.

All in all, I’m happy with my purchase of the Amazon Echo Show 5 and Blink cameras. The combination of security, entertainment, and convenience that they provide make them well worth the investment. While the battery issue with the cameras can be a bit frustrating at times, it’s a minor inconvenience compared to the overall value and usefulness of the product. If I were to do it all over again, I might consider purchasing a camera without batteries just to avoid the hassle of constantly having to swap them out. However, for now, I’m happy with my purchase and would definitely recommend the Echo Show and Blink cameras to others.

Whether you want to cut videos, edit photos or play the latest x86 games thanks to CrossOver, everything works with the new MacBook! I can count on one hand how many times the fan has turned on. Whether you’re running Windows 11 VmWare or editing a long 4K video, the MacBook doesn’t even get warm. Since I prefer a large display, I took the MacBook in the 16 inch variant. Additionally, it has slightly better cooling, although that doesn’t make a difference in most cases. Design-wise, the new MacBook Pro looks a bit thicker than the old one and is quite a bit heavier. Compared to my 15-inch 2018 MacBook Pro, the new one is a good bit heavier and seems a bit chunkier. Furthermore, the display is rounded at the top two corners and fills the space of the MacBook much better than the previous models. As mentioned earlier, you can hardly hear the fans of the MacBook thanks to Apple’s Silicon technology. When idling, the Intel Macs are always louder than an M1, even under full load. The Liquid Retina XDR display looks simply incredible and really has a stunning contrast. The old Macs never displayed “real” black, but more of a gray. Even the notch on the iPhone 13 Pro Max is smaller! The iPhone even has FaceID inside! It just doesn’t make sense that the notch is so big and is a big minus point for me. You sell laptops for 5000€ and can’t manage to make the notch a bit smaller? Are you kidding me? It looks like the iPhone X from 2017! If you had at least included FaceID, the size would still be justifiable, but this is simply a no-go! It annoys me each time I use the Mac! Bullshit!

Apple Silicon – Rosetta

Initially, very few applications were compatible with Apple’s new proprietary processor architecture, but more are coming day by day! Another advantage of the Apple Silicon processors is that developers of IOS apps can also develop a program for the Mac with little effort. Furthermore, there are numerous games from Apple that are optimized for the Mac. For Intel programs that have not yet been optimized for M1, Rosetta comes into play. Rosetta is a translation layer from Apple that allows Intel programs to run on M1 Macs. Even with more complex applications like Cura, the program doesn’t feel slow at all.

Apple’s backpedaling with ports

In 2016, Apple killed almost all ports on the Mac. At that time Apple was firmly convinced that they want to go the minimalist route. Unfortunately, it ended up that you needed a doongle for each and every thing. What made many Apple fans sad was that Apple also removed MagSafe. But in 2021 it’s finally back and it’s awesome! I will never understand why Apple removed this awesome feature in the first place. For people who work with cameras a lot, the SD card slot on the Mac is also super handy. You can really save a lot of adapters that way. On the other hand, it’s a bit of a shame that Apple only includes HDMI 2.0. But who could guess that someone with a 4000€ device would want to use more than 4k @60. Apple, really! That was a bit of a flop!
Instead of Thunderbold 3, Apple now uses Thunderbold 4. One of the many advantages is that you can now connect more monitors than before. Anker has published a great post about the advantages of Thunderbold 4. You can find the link here.

Parallels 17 (Pro)

I’m sure you’ve all heard of Parallels. It’s a program that can virtualize other operating systems on your Mac. On Intel Macs, I’ve actually used VmWare Fusion, which has served me well. Unfortunately, unlike Parallels, VmWare is quite behind in developing an M1 version. On my MacBook Pro 2021, I have to be able to install Windows programs, since Windows is used for computer science at school. The installation was very very easy and Parallels automated everything. There is no Windows to configure, no drivers to install, and nothing to set up. Compared to VmWAre Fusion on the Intel Macs, it’s really much faster and easier. The Apple Silicon M1 chips are ARM chips, which means that you can only install ARM OS in Parallels. Fortunately, Windows 11 ARM can also emulate x86. So you have almost no disadvantages compared to an Intel Mac. Parallels offers several versions. The Basic version is limited to 8GB vRAM and 4 CPU cores. With the Parallels Pro version, more is possible, so that you can really push the new MacBook Pros to their limits. I think for most things the normal version is sufficient. Unfortunately you can’t use the PRO version with a one-time payment, you have to pay 100€ per year. Before you can test Parallels for 14 days for free.

From my own experience, I can say that Parallels runs bombastically on the M1 Max. I was used to noisy running and a very warm Mac from my Intel MacBooks. The new M1 doesn’t even get lukewarm and I couldn’t hear any fan noise at any time. WOW!

It is also quite cool that there is the so-called Coherence-Mode. This way the Windows programs merge with the MacOS operating system. You no longer have a window in which the VM is running, but many individual windows. A very cool feature!

With my M1 Max 32 Core GPU and Parallels 17 Pro (version 17.1.1) I could reach 1550 points in the single core score and 5301 points in the multi core score. I configured the system with 4 CPU cores and 16GB RAM. The test was performed in battery mode and neither a fan was heard nor was the Mac slower than usual due to the VM. You can download a PDF file of my GB5 Score here.

Even though the results in Geekbench are pretty good, Parallels is only suitable for gaming on the M1 to a limited extent. Most games are for x86 computers and therefore have to run through different virtualization layers on the M1. Parallels is simply not designed for gaming.

The M1 has exceeded all expectations and the M1 Pro and M1 Max are simply a performance miracle. A lot of performance. Little heat. Little space. Awesome! But since Apple’s M1 chips are ARM chips, gaming is not that easy. Well, gaming on MacOS has never been easy. There are few games that run natively on Apple silicon. However, many games still run on the Mac thanks to Rosetta. An alternative to Parallels in this case is CrossOver. If you still want to play the old x86 games on the M1, you can use CrossOver. CrossOver is much faster than Parallels for gaming and is quite simple to use.

How does CrossOver work in a nutshell?
CrossOver is a software based on Wine. Wine is a compatibility layer that allows Windows applications to run on Intel Macs. Unlike Parallels, Wine does not use the full Windows, but only the part that is needed for compilation. This makes CrossOver much faster than Parallels. So the guys from Crossover simply combined Apple’s translation layer Rosetta with Wine and created CrossOVer. In addition, CrossOver can install many programs automatically. This can save a lot of steps. For example, CrossOVer automatically installs the required files for games that require DirectX. Additionally you can install your own Windows programs via CrossOver. You just need to have the .exe file on your Mac.For more information you can have a look here and here.

The user interface of CrossOver is easy to use and very clear in my opinion. I have tried GTA V and Star Wars BattleFront II. Both I installed in a Winows 7 64bit bottle. GTA V ran very well even in online mode in native resolution at high settings. This game often doesn’t perform as well on high-end desktop computers. Star Wars Battlefront was a bit jerky and I had a few graphics bugs that didn’t make the game look any better. For tutorials on how to use CrossOver, I recommend this YouTube channel.

You can check out the AppleGamingWiki to see which games run best on the M1 and how.

The BAD-USB works to report to the computer as an input device so it can control the computer. There are numerous pre-built payloads, such as “Wifi Password Grabber”, “Rickroll” or even a payload that automatically uploads all Firefox credentials to an FTP server. It’s just mindblowing what a Fake-USB can do. I have linked a list here that leads to different payloads. By default, the Pico uses a US-American Keyboard layout, but there were other users too having this issue. See the discussion on GitHub here. I just wrote my own payload which is very simple and only opens my website www.speichermann.org. It is super simple to get used to micropython, if you already have some basic coding experience and took just a few minutes to hook everything up.

Reading Time: 2 minutes

We still have an IPad Air 2 that works well, but the battery broke a few weeks ago, so you could not even turn on the ipad on the power cord.

We ordered a battery on the internet and opened the IPad with the help of a Youtube video. The glue still holds very tight after all these years ;-). We took a deck of cards to open the Ipad easier.

Replacing the battery is relatively simple once you have opened the iPad. You have to loosen a few screws, disconnect the flex cables and disconnect the display. Then you have to get the battery out of the iPad.

Closing the iPad was very simple, no new glue was needed, the old one still worked.

Unfortunately, I went under the display with a card when opening, now there is a small glue stain. Annoying.

In conclusion, it is a good alternative to the replacement in the Apple Store, as long as you are more careful than I was when disconnecting the display.

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The Astro A50 is a wireless gaming headset of the premium class. It offers numerous features, such as the charging cradle.

Charging
The headset is not charged via a cable on the headset like most other wireless gaming headsets, but via a charging dock. The charging dock looks very high-quality, has a display that shows important information, such as the battery level, and is simultaneously a transmitter/receiver for the computer.

Sound/Software
The sound of the headset is super good, you can create an individual sound profile through different EQ profiles in the Astro Command Center. The software from Astro is very good, you have no bugs, and you have many adjustment options.

In Windows 10, you have two audio outputs, one for the chat and one for the game. This allows you to decide for yourself how loud you want to hear the game in relation to the Discord/Skype/Teamspeak.

The microphone sounds okay, but I would have expected more for the high price, because the microphone sounds very compressed. When you flip the microphone up, it is automatically muted.

Comfortable?
The headset fits snugly on the head and has very comfortable EarPads that still fit great even after hours of wear. The cushion on top is a bit too hard for me and can hurt a bit after a few hours. I also noticed that the headset is completely open and you can hear everything that happens outside. It is really as if you put Airpods Pro on the transparency mode.

Dolby Audio
Compared to 7.1 Surround sound or just regular surround sound, I can really say, that it’s awesome. It sounds like you’re in a Cineame. It’s easy to locate enemies in games. I tested Star Wars Battle Front 1 +2 and it’s game changing, it really is a step upwards compared to regular surround.

Comfort
The headset sits comfortably on the head, but you have very little to no noise isolation, because of the fabric pads.

To summarize, the Astro A50 is a good choice for people who value Dolby Audio, good sound and bug-free software, assuming you don’t have a low budget.

Reading Time: 2 minutes

As a proper replacement for my Corsair Void Pro USB, I picked the SteelSeries Arctis 9. The Arctis 9 is a wireless headset that can either be connected to a PC or PS4/PS5 via 2.4Ghz.

Connection / Battery
The range over 2.4 Ghz is really great, I can move floors and still hear my sound from the PC, despite the fact that fat concrete walls are in between. The headset also comes with Bluetooth, so you can connect it to your phone and PC/PS4 at the same time. SteelSeries has equipped the Arctis9 with a battery life of 20 hours.

Sound / Microphone
Thanks to the DTS Surround sound, it is also really fun to play shooters with it. Compared to the Corsair Void Pro USB, the Arctis 9 has a bass-heavy sound. Compared to the Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro, the Arctis 9 has a less clear sound. The microphone of the Arctis 9 is extendable and has a red LED that lights up when the microphone is muted.

Comfortable?
The pads are made of fabric and are very comfortable on the skin. Compared to the Astro A50s, the headset shields external noise better. You have to decide for yourself whether that is an advantage or disadvantage.

Software
When you set up the headset on Windows 10 for the first time, you will have two inputs, one called ” SteelSeries Arctis 9 chat” and one called “SteelSeries Arctis 9 Game”, which is used to adjust how loud the game is in relation to the music or Discord with the slider on the headset.

The software from SteelSeries called “SteelSeries Engine 3” is not very well optimized. I had to uninstall and reinstall the software several times to get the sidetone working and adjustable. The microphone sounds okay, but nothing spectacular. It’s not super clear, but it’s good enough for Discord, Skype, and a few video chats for school.

The SteelSeries Arctis 9 is a solid all-around headset if you’re looking for a 2.4 Ghz headset with decent sound. It was important for me not to have a detachable microphone, as I generally think that’s impractical.

UPDATE after 2 weeks of use:

The Arctis 9 has disappointed me a lot, SteelSeries has disappointed me a lot. I have massive software issues that make the headset unusable for me. The SoundProfile does not work, the headset sometimes just has no sound and you have to reinstall the software in order to use the headset again. I tested the headset on three different computers, all had the same problems. For me, the headset is a case for return. #SteelseriesIstrash

Reading Time: < 1 minute

I bought the Smart Keyboard Folio from Apple for my IPad Pro 11 inch to have a light, thin, well transportable keyboard for my IPad Pro. I occasionally have to take the Ipad to school with me, so it’s really great to have a keyboard with me.

The keys have a short travel and they press ok, not too special. I’ve really always been very comfortable with the keyboard, but after a year and a half of daily use, it has a few imperfections. The Smart Folio has some scratches on the front, but that’s not bad in my opinion.

Unfortunately, one button no longer works properly, you have to press it very hard.

In addition, the Smart Folio dissolves on one side, which should not happen for the price of 200 € and the usual Apple quality. Maybe I received a keyboard with a material defect. Returning the device is excluded again.

In my opinion, the Apple Smart Keyboard Folio is a great keyboard for people who want to work on the iPad with a normal keyboard. The price of 200 € is justified in my opinion, if the material is appropriate, if you have a look at the prices of the other devices in the Apple Store.

Reading Time: 2 minutes

I have tested the MSI MAG322CQR for a few months now and have a good overview of the monitor. The monitor is 32-inch, has a QHD (2560x1440p) resolution, a refresh rate of 165hz and a 10bit panel.

10Bit / G-Sync (FreeSync Compatible)
The 10bit feature, unfortunately, can only be activated if you set the monitor to 144hz. Thanks to the Freesync function, you don’t have any image cracks, even with NVIDIA graphics cards (Freesync is Gsync compatible).

Resolution / Refresh rate
The monitor is really good for playing video games, as it runs buttery smooth due to the high refresh rate. The QHD resolution on a screen size of 32 inches is sufficient, but not outstanding. The QHD resolution on 32 inches has the same pixel density as FullHD on 24 inches. The MSI MAG322CQR is 1500R curved, so it’s more pleasing to the eye when looking at it for several hours at a time.

Smears?
I could notice slight smears when testing extremely fast games, like CS:GO, but this is normal for a VA panel. The streaks are barely noticeable and not nearly as bad as the Gigabyte G32QC. For me, it’s fine.

USB-C / MacBook?
The USB-C port is great for MacBook users because you can connect your Macbook to the monitor, charge it, and use the monitor’s USB hub, all with just one cable. Charging via the Monitor works up to 15W, so you need an extra PSU for gaming.

DP-Port Issue / Downside
Unfortunately, I also had some negative experiences with the monitor.I always had the monitor connected to my NVIDIA graphics card via Displayport so I could use the full 165hz of the monitor, but unfortunately the monitor did not switch to standby when Windows gave the command to turn off all monitors. This caused the monitor to always display a black image. I tried several workarounds and also tested another computer with a different operating system, but the error still persisted. My last fix was to connect the monitor via HDMI, but then the monitor only displays 144hz. I don’t know if I just got a bad model, but it’s certainly not optimal that I can now only use the monitor with 144hz instead of 165hz.

Conclusion:
The MSI MAG322CQR is a super monitor, for people who want a large monitor with a high refresh rate. However, you have to be aware that you have to compromise when it comes to Displayport compatibility.

Reading Time: 2 minutes

I bought my Bose QC 35ii last year. I wanted them for a flight from Frankfurt to New York. I have since been very satisfied with the quality of the Bose quietcomfort 35 ii.

Sound/Accessories
The sound is extremely clear to my ears and sounds just great. I bought the special edition in midnight blue, which looks really great- In addition, I bought a cable with microphone from Bose, so I can use the headphones on my PS4 with microphone. The cable is in my opinion with 30 € too expensive.

Usecases
The Bose QC 35ii is both to listen to music and to watch FIlme a super choice. For gaming, the headphones are not ideal, because they don’t have 7.1 surround sound and via Bluetooth the latency is just not optimal. For gaming, I would suggest the Astro A50.

Bose Connect App
The Bose Connect app is very clear and offers all the functions you need. Unlike normal Bluetooth headphones, the QC35ii uses the smartphone to manage the connections. You can be connected to 2 devices at the same time, which makes it much more convenient. You can also adjust the noise cancelling level in the app. I have the noise cancelling mostly on the maximum, but in my opinion, you have a bit more bass in neutral mode.

Comfortable?
The Bose QC 35ii feel very light on the head, but the pads on the ears are made of leather, which is not ideal for me, because you tend to sweat underneath. I think if the pads were made of fabric, the noise cancelling would suffer. In addition, I notice that if you wear the headphones for several hours at a time, the head open hurts a bit. The cushion could have been a bit thicker at this point.

Active noise cancelling
The Bose QC 35ii has a much louder background noise compared to the Bose 700, although both are really quiet. The Noicecancelling is incredible in the headphones, you really hear almost no external noise when you wear them. Compared to the AirPods Pro, this is really a step upwards.

I can highly recommend the Bose QC 35ii just for the current price, if you like overar headphones and you want crystal clear sound.
