If developers want to publish an App in the AppStore, Apple checks it from top to bottom and has strict rules about design as well. Furthermore, they used to charge a high fee for anything sold as In-App-Purchases. Epic Games, the company behind Fortnite was fed up paying these fees and bypassed their fee by adding their own payment system. Of course, Apple banned all Epic Games Apps from the AppStore, but recently Apple had to open their doors again in this case. Thanks to Epic Games and to the European Union, Apple was forced to weaken their AppStore policy and the Digital Markets Act was born. Not only Epic Games benefits from this, but anyone who sells digital goods via Apples Store.

Up until 2024, Emulators like for example Nintendo64 were forbidden in the AppStore. The only two options if you wanted an emulator on your iDevice was either to use Sideloading as a loophole or straight up to jailbreak your iDevice. Sideloading made use of the Apple Developer Account, which is intentionally used to test the Software you coded yourself on your own device bevore public release. This also meant that you could sideload any .ipa (Application archive file formats from Apple’s) to your personal device. The only downside was that the free developer account allows you too keep the sideloaded Apps for 7 days. Afterwards, you had to refresh the Apps or get a paid developer account. So far, third-party apps have been neither simple nor easy for iDevice users.

As I said, Epic games won againts Apple in court related to fees and third party Apps. In the European Union, apple is now forced to change many things, which they apparantly do not like Since I already gained some experience with Jailbreaking some of my unused iDevices, I know how great Retroarch is. For most games, you do not need much computing power, so most of the games should even work on very old Devices. RetroArch combines N64, PPSSPP, PSX and many many more Cores for emulating old gaming consoles. You can see the whole list in their AppStore Description here. The amount of supported cores grows fast! Retroarch basically is Kodi but for retro-gaming. To make it even better, you do not have to download any third party AppStores, Retroarch is available directly in the AppStore.

You can see that the UI used to be an Android one, but all functions are working fine from my experience. Riley Testult’s Delta emulator is designed with more attention to detail, but only offers a fraction of the Cores and Features offered in Retroarch.

Emulation has never been easy. There are always files somewhere that you have to move back and forth. In the end, it may still not work as well as expected, but you have to expect that. For example, if you want to play PS1 games, you have to manually download and install the Firmware files. In different cases, input controllers may not work or some games even keep crashing. The positive aspect about that is, that Retroarch is open source with a massive community which works on improving the emulator all the time and offers help in case of problems.

Downloading is a good keyword! Since your iDevice has neither a CD Rom drive nor a way to read cassettes, you have to use digital copes of the games. In my case, it is not allowed to download those Games from the Internet as it constitutes a copyright infringement. I am sure you will find what you are looking for on the Internet though This is not legal advice and may vary depending on where you live.

Retroarch offers tons of features, including NetPlay, changing Shaders, using cheats, playing with SaveStates, using custom overlays and even fast forward and rewind. I would defenetly suggest you to try out this emulator if you’re into old console games!

As mentioned previously, before the Digital Markets Act existed, you could only use third party Apps on your iDevice via sideloading. The most popular option used to be AltStore for years. The creator, Riley Testult implemented many useful features like WIFI-refresing your Apps and much more. After the EU-laws were passed, Riley announced AltStore PAL is one of the first 3rd party AppStores in the Apple Universe. However, as Apple still likes to put obstacles in the way of developers, third-party app stores have to pay a so-called core technology fee for each user. AltStore passes this fee of €0.5 directly on to users, meaning that each user has to pay €1.8 per year. The difference presumably goes into the team’s pocket.

The only two Apps available now are the previously mentioned Delta emulator and an improved clipboard App which are both coded by Riley. This is because Apple’s notarization process takes weeks and months in their case. They check all Apps that are available in any AppStore on iOS. If you ask me, Apple purposely slows down this process. It’s just Apple things, but it’s annoying that apple is still so unwilling to do anything. I’m curious to see what else will happen in the coming weeks and whether we’ll see any more apps at all. You can follow what is going on about AltStore, right here on their X feed.

When it comes to keeping track of all of our passwords, a password manager is a must-have tool. One of the best options out there is KeePass, which is a free, open-source password manager. In this blog post, I’ll be discussing why I choose to use the client KeePassXC, which is available for both MacOS and Windows, and why I believe it is a great choice for anyone looking for a password manager.

One of the biggest benefits of using KeePass is that it allows you to store all of your passwords locally, rather than in the cloud. This is important to me because I believe that storing passwords locally is more secure. For example, with a service like NordPass, your passwords are stored in their own cloud and are therefore at risk of being leaked. However, when your passwords are stored locally, you have much more control over their security. This is especially important for those who have sensitive information that they need to protect, such as financial or business information. Of course, it is also important to be able to access the passwords quickly in your browser, which is possible with KeePassXC through an extra browser plugin. The passwords can only be filled in in the browser if the database is unlocked.

KeePassXC is a free and open-source password manager that is an alternative to the traditional KeePass client. One of the main advantages of using KeePassXC is its user-friendly interface, which is designed to be easy to navigate and understand.
The design is much more visually pleasing than the original KeePass and makes it easier to manage your passwords.
Another key benefit of KeePassXC is the regular updates that are released. These updates often include new features and improvements to the software, which means that it is constantly evolving and getting better. This is in contrast to the original KeePass client, which is not updated as frequently.
As a windows and MacOs user I immediately noticed that there is no “normal” KeePass client for native macOS. Of course you can now install the Windows version on Mac via Parallels or wine, but why do that when there is a better alternative anyway. For me, after some research, KeePassXC was the one to go for.
If you are looking for other KeePass clients/apps or want to browse for plugins, I can recommend this GitHub repo.

In my case I store the file on our own SeaFile server, which is hosted from home. This way I can always synchronize my database quickly no matter where I am and no matter what device I use.
When you open KeePass(XC) for the first time, you will be asked to create a new database or add an existing one. Normally the file containing your database is a .kbdx file. What you do with this file/where you store it is up to you. From iCloud to USB sticks that you remove from your computer every time you use them, pretty much anything is possible.
For what is not possible, there is mostly thanks to the gigantic community a suitable plugin. The plugins are listed here on the official website, truly there is a plugin for almost everything you can imagine.

There are also numerous apps for iPadOS/iOS that are compatible with KeePass. Most of them cost money either once or even as a subscription. But since I was looking for a free alternative, I ended up with KeePassium. Although the app also offers a version for which you have to pay, the free version is completely sufficient for me. In my opinion, the most important disadvantages of this version are that you can only synchronize a maximum of one database and that you can not use QuickAutofill in Safari. However, the normal AutoFill works, so you only need a few clicks more. The paid version costs 14,99€/year or lifetime 59,99€. More details here!
Another great feature of Keepassium is its support for Touch ID and Face ID. This allows you to unlock the app quickly and securely, without having to enter your master password.
In terms of design, Keepassium is user-friendly and easy to navigate. The interface is simple and straightforward, making it easy to find the information you need.
Overall, Keepassium is a great app for anyone who uses KeePass or KeePassXC. It offers a lot of functionality and convenience, and its support for cloud syncing and biometric authentication make it a secure option as well. It is a must-have app for anyone who wants to access their passwords on the go.

With KeePass and Seafile, I have complete control over my passwords and their storage, which is something that I find very important.

DISCONTINUED since Elon wants to charge devs 100$/month for using the twitter api

To gain some experience with Python, I decided to write a simple Twitter bot. The bot tweets several times a day the fuel prices in Germany.I use the Tweepy library to access the Twitter API. To make sure that the tweets are sent at a certain time every day, I used the Schedule library…. At the beginning I had some difficulties with it, but in the meantime I managed it. Surely there are more efficient and better methods to schedule the tweets. Furthermore, I plan to use the TankerKönig API to tweet the prices of individual gas stations.
Since the PS4 jailbreak for firmware version 9.0.0 was released, almost everyone can jailbreak their console. Previously, it was only possible to jailbreak the PS4 on firmware 7.5.5. Anyone who had a newer firmware could not jailbreak. Furthermore, the jailbreak on version 7.5.5 did not run 100% stable, which is why the only true jailbreak ran on firmware version 5.0.5. At the end of 2021, a file system exploit was found in firmware version 9.0.0, which makes it possible to jailbreak the PS4. I can only recommend anyone who is thinking about jailbreaking their PlayStation to turn off automatic updates. You should keep the firmware as old as possible.

However, if you have an older firmware version than 9.0.0, then you can use a USB stick to upgrade your PS4 to 9.0.0 and install the GoldHEN exploit. I can recommend this tutorial from Modern Vintage Gamer, if you want to jailbreak your PS4. You need a USB stick, a computer and a PS4 with firmware 9.0.0 or lower. Firstly, you need to upgrade to FW 9.0.0 to install the Jailbreak, it doesn’t work on any other version so far. Secondly, you can start off installing the GoldHEN exploit. The installation is pretty simple anyway, so really anyone can do it.

Why should you jailbreak your PS4?

The reason is similar to iPhones, you jailbreak to be the real owner of your PS4. For example, you can personalize the PlayStation better. Another advantage is that you can connect to the PS4’s file system via FTP. Furthermore, you can patch the games, which allows you to play special mods from other users. Theoretically, you could also install cheats or mod menus in the games, but this often means that the game is no longer fun to play. You can also install the HomeBrew Store, which allows you to install various emulators. This makes it possible to play PS1 or PS2 games on the PS4. Unfortunately, the PS4 is not backwards compatible with PS3 games and the emulation requires too many resources. Unfortunately, to play PS3 games you either have to have a powerful computer or own a PS3 yourself.

Disadvantages of a jailbroken PS4

Even though a jailbroken PS4 has tons of advantages, there are unfortunately also some hefty disadvantages. With a jailbroken PS4 you can’t play online and you can’t use the PS-Network. Sony takes extreme action against users who jailbreak their PS4. Most users who have jailbroken their PS4 block Sony’s servers on the PS4. It can happen that if you accidentally log into Sony’s servers in the jailbroken state, you will be completely banned and will never be able to access the PS network with that PS4 again, even if you remove the jailbreak. This means that you also can’t chat with your friends in a lobby. If you want to play online with your friends, I can only recommend that you do not jailbreak your PS4.

Is it worth the price you pay?

It depends on what you do with your PlayStation! In my case, I only play offline games occasionally. When I play online, I’m always on the computer. So it wasn’t a problem for me that I can’t play online anymore with the PS4. Furthermore, the PlayStation’s warranty had long since expired anyway. But if you play online with your friends, it’s definitely not worth it. I still think it’s worth staying on firmware 9.0.0, even if you don’t want to jailbreak. If you ever want to sell your console, it’s always the case that consoles that have the possibility to be jailbroken thanks to a low firmware will be sold at a higher price. In the end, everyone has to decide for themselves if they want to keep their PlayStation clean or if they want to dive into the jailbreak world.

App Cleaner

Installing Mac apps is easy. A complete uninstallation including the removal of unused files is more difficult. If you just put the program you want to uninstall into the trash, the program is gone, but often there are still files in other directories. These files are often a few gigabytes in size and will clutter up your storage unnecessarily if you don’t remove them. For this purpose there is App Cleaner.

Once you have installed and started App Cleaner, uninstalling unwanted apps is very easy. All you have to do is drag and drop the program you want to uninstall into the App Cleaner interface. App Cleaner automatically finds the associated files and displays them in a list. You can choose which files and folders to delete and which to keep.

Notability

Notability is definitely one of the apps I use the most on my MacBook. At school, I often take notes on my iPad with Apple Pencil or Magic Keyboard. It’s really fun this way because you can insert PDF files or photos with just the click of a button and never have to carry notebooks, pads or books again. Notability also has a Mac app in addition to the iPad app, which is super structured and works very much like the iPad app. Thanks to iCloud (or any other cloud of your choice), data is synced between iPad, iPhone and MacBook in just seconds. In the app you can divide the notes into different topics and categories, for example category: school notes and topic: biology. You can really sort everything very efficiently and find everything again. It is also worth mentioning that Notability is recommended by Apple in the AppStore.

Unfortunately, Notability has introduced a subscription model at the end of 2021 instead of a one-time payment option of $10. Now Notability costs $11.99 per year for new users in the offer and $14.99 per year regularly. Probably the only benefit from the new subscription model is that there is a free version that is limited to the basic features. However, this is an option if you have a small budget :). Unfortunately, you don’t have cloud syncing and handwriting recognition in this model. With the version that costs $14.99 annually, you have all the features, such as handwriting recognition, cloud synchronization, automatic backups and new themes. It’s a pity that Notability has switched to a subscription model, but on the other hand I understand that new updates always cost money. In my opinion, 10$ one time was a fair price.

I especially like the fact that no matter which screen you are in in the app, you can always see directly whether you are connected or not and can connect or disconnect at the same time with the quick connect button.
For me as an iPhone user with a notch, this is handy because you can’t see if you’re connected to the VPN without going into the control center. I also noticed that the mobile app also has a killswitch. I haven’t seen that with any other VPN provider. To be honest, I don’t have a use case for it, but it’s cool to have such a feature. Of course, the app also has all the usual standard features like list view and map view of the servers.
There are 4 levels in ProtonVPN. In the free tier, you can connect to 23 servers in 3 countries. However, the VPN connection is throttled to “medium”. For 4€ per month you can connect to 400 servers in 40+ countries and the speed is specified as “high”. In my opinion, the other levels are more aimed at users who want to encrypt servers or similar with the VPN. All levels are not logged according to ProtonVPN. Can this really be true if you can use the VPN completely free of charge? The price of 4€ is in my opinion rather expensive compared to Nord VPN (80€ / 2Years) or Cyberghost (65€ / 2Years). As with almost every other VPN, there are always new “unbeatable offers” at ProtonVPN.

I have a contract with Telekom with about 260 mbit/s upload, 43 mbit/s download and a ping of about 12ms. First, I tested on Windows 10. To be honest, I did not have high expectations, since a free VPN usually achieves poor values in the speed test. But when I tested Proton VPN, I was really convinced. The upload and download with VPN are hardly slower than without VPN. Even if the ping is quite high with 176ms, these values are excellent. Then I tested my iphone, which gave moderately good results. In download I reached about 41mbit/s, in upload 9,35 mbit/s and the ping was 135ms. Compared to Windows 10, the result is not the best, but for the fact that it is free, it is a good result. I only need the VPN on IOS anyway to bypass website blocking in foreign networks.

In conclusion, ProtonVPN in the free tier is a great option if you don’t want to spend money. The speed test definitely convinced me on the desktop and should be ideal for everything except gaming. I also think that ProtonVPN in the free tier is already better than some paid VPN providers. Cyberghost, for example, delivers poor uploads and downloads, the quick connect button doesn’t work properly, and there’s no real killswitch in their interface either. I rate ProtonVPN 4.5 out of 5 stars in the free tier because I haven’t found a comparable free VPN that even comes close to achieving such scores.

Reading Time: 3 minutes

I have been using Notability for 4 years and I am still 100% convinced. Currently, I use my iPad Pro 2018 11″ with a keyboard and an Apple Pencil. In this blog post, I’ll go over my experiences and the best apps to use in combination with Notability.

For me, Notability is the best app for taking notes in school. Whether it’s math, German, or even history, I always use this app. I have the app installed on my iPad and my iPhone to always have all my homework with me. I sync my files via iCloud Drive. You can also sync your files via WebDAV, DropBox, Google Drive, OneDrive, or Box.

There is also Notability for the MacBook, which is super handy for doing more complex homework with a bigger screen. In addition to synchronization, I do backups of all my files via WebDAV to a self-hosted SeaFile server.

Another feature is that you can make voice recordings that can later be saved in the PDF. The microphones on my iPad Pro work super well even at a distance of several meters. In a classroom, this would work well if you want to record what the teacher is saying. I haven’t tested this yet, because in Germany this would only be possible with consent.

Since I am in school in Germany, it is difficult that you always give all worksheets digitally. Since Corona, we have a school portal where it would be possible to upload the worksheets for all students for free. Unfortunately, some teachers don’t want to do this, don’t know how to do it, or are concerned about copyright. In this case, we often get the sheets distributed.

I use SwiftScan to scan worksheets with the iPad. The scans look great and can be inserted into Notability with a few clicks. The scanned worksheets can be edited directly in Notability and look very high resolution, which is a great alternative to “real” scanners.

For mathematical equations, Notability is also suitable, because you can choose different “sheet types”. Furthermore, there are add-ons, such as math conversion, which allows you to convert handwritten formulas via OCR into high-resolution images.

The best plugin in my opinion is the handwriting recognition plugin. The plugin is designed to automatically convert handwriting into printed text when you write with the Apple Pencil or any other stylus. The feature is super handy, especially if you don’t have a keyboard on your iPad. I often share homework during school hours with my friends via AirDrop who also use Notability. A handy side effect when you forget to do your homework.

I think the price for Notability is definitely justified since the app is constantly updated and especially in combination with the Apple Pencil is a must for everyone who uses their iPad at school.

I’ve linked an example below of how to use Notability for math equations and formulas. In this PDF I have not converted my handwriting to images using an addon.

Notability PDF Math FormulasDownload

Reading Time: 3 minutes

In this Blog Post I tested crypto mining for 24h. I also compared the profit with the electricity costs here in Germany. I used my gaming computer for mining.

How does mining work in a nutshell?
In Bitcoin mining, you use your computing power to solve complex math problems. Most of the time you only use your graphics card. The CPU is usually not profitable and only draws power unnecessarily. You process the transactions of other users with your computing power. As a reward, you get bitcoins or at least parts of a bitcoin.

The more miners are active, the less profit everyone has. However, since bitcoin is currently at a record high, this also means that each miner gets more money.

Software
As mining program I used NiceHash. It is very popular and used by many other users. The setup was very simple and took only a few clicks. You can download different algorithms in the software. I downloaded all of them right away. Then NiceHash decides for itself which algorithm is best for you and your hardware. I mostly used Octopus and daggerhashimoto.

Therefore, you don’t always mine bitcoin, but also other coins that are just more profitable to mine. Another popular coin is Etherum, for example.

Additionally, I set the power limit of my graphics card to 85% via MSI Afterburner, so the GPU doesn’t get as hot and consumes less power. This was important to me so that the card does not break down in the long run.

NiceHash will always pay out the money in Bitcoin. It is important to remember that the 2Factor authentication must be on already for at least 24 hours to transfer the money. If you have a Coinbase account, then the money can be transferred directly there.

Electricity prices based on Germany/Hessen
For me, one kilowatt hour costs about 0.2744€. My PC consumes about 280-300W with all monitors turned off during demanding mining. So mining costs me about 2€ a day.

To monitor the power consumption, I have a Fritz brand smart adapter. This has worked great. You could even export a table and embed it iregendwo. Cool.

Profitable? 24h test
How profitable is mining in Germany? With my RTX 2080 Strix I earned about 3.3€ per day. Minus the 2€ electricity costs, I would have a daily profit of 1.3€. The new generation of Nvidia graphics cards is much more profitable. Unfortunately the new graphics cards are hard to get, because they are very good for mining. You can calculate the profit here.

Conclusion
Compared to other countries, Germany has high electricity costs. It always depends on when you mined. Even if many forums say that the graphics cards do not break so quickly when they are undervolted, I believe that over a longer period of time you will eventually have defects. All in all, it is very interesting to try mining, but for me personally it is nothing, because the profit is simply too low. With a more powerful graphics card, it’s something else again.

This Post is about my experience with my bootcamped Intel MacBook Pro. The BootCamp partition is installed to a external Samsung SATA SSD.

Installation Windows / official BootCamp drivers
The installation of Windows is very simple, you use a normal Windows Boot Stick. I have installed my Windows partition on an external SSD for storage reasons. Therefore I had to boot into the “Boot in Recovery Mode” to deactivate different security mechanisms.

When I booted via my SSD into Bootcamp, the trackpad and the keyboard didnt work, I had to connect external devices. Keep this in mind when you want to install BootCamp/Windows.

When booted into Windows, the installation of the necessary Bootcamp drivers opens automatically. The whole thing works super well. The Mac reboots a few times and if everything went well, you can use the keyboard, TrackPad and camera. The TouchID does not work under BootCamp.

Inoffical BootCamp drivers
For better performance here are free unofficial bootcamp drivers. The installation is a bit complicated. You have to start Windows in safe mode. You can find the tutorial here. The performance of the drivers is really great. Especially when gaming, the performance has increased noticeably. In some games I reach almost double the FPS.

Bootcamp vs virtualization software
Why install BootCamp when you can virtualize via VMware Fusion or Parallels? It’s simple, Bootcamp is simply more performant, especially the graphics card is not emulated in BootCamp. If you don’t care so much about that, virtualization is surely the more comfortable solution, because you can use Windows and MacOS at the same time.

Conclusion
BootCamp is a great solution if you want to run special Windows programs on your Mac. Gaming with the MacBook is no longer a problem under BootCamp. Games are anything but slow and it’s fun to play the latest games directly on the Mac. VMware is a great alternative for me if you don’t want to use GPU demanding programs.

Reading Time: 3 minutes

The following Blog Post is about my Experience with Jailbraking and the advantages and disadvantages. I tested checkra1n and unc0ver on IOS 13 and IOS 14.

Recently, Apple has released IOS 14 and fixed major security vulnerabilitys. For long time the IPhone 12 was “unjailbreakable” because of the new security chip. Now, we’re able to fully jailbreak any device up to IOS 14.3.

Unc0ver – Easy to install?
There are several ways to install the Uncover app on your device. The app is unsigned and can be downloaded from the Uncover website. Then you can sign the app with a computer and AltStore or Sideloadly. This requires an AppleID. Alternatively, you can trust 3rd party app stores and download the app through them. However, this is not safe in my opinion.

Customization
With a normal Apple device, you’re kind of trapped. You can only personalize the home screen to a limited extent, the animations are predefined by Apple and generally, the home screen looks the same on almost everyone. With various tweaks like “Cylinder” or “Snowboard”, you can customize your IOS device according to your own wishes. You could say you have infinite possibilities.

Unsigned Apps
Apple does not allow unsigned apps to be installed on their devices. There are of course options, like AltStore or Sideloadly, that allow this on non-jailbroken devices. However, on a jailbroken device you can install any unsigned app via a tweak and the Filza File Manager.

Downgrading Apps, that are still hosted in the AppStore
The Cydia Tweak “AppStore++” allows you to download old app versions from the AppStore. This does not work on devices that are not jailbroken. I think this is a cool feature that is definitely a reason to jailbreak your device.

CarBridge Tweak for Apple CarPlay
One of the coolest advantages of a jailbroken iPhone is that with the tweak “CarBridge” you can launch almost any app available for the iPhone via CarPlay. One example is the Blitzer.de app. On the iPhone, you can use it, but on the CarPlay display, it is hidden. Also, you could watch videos while driving without having to code your car and without losing your car warranty. All in all, I think this tweak is a must-have for any CarPlay user.

Emulators
With IOS 14.4, several unsigned emulators no longer work on IOS. With the jailbreak, the apps work of course. So you can emulate Wii U games or PSP games easily with the device in your pocket. Even N64 or Atari can be emulated. The games run buttery smooth and even play well with joysticks on the display.

Downsides
When you jailbreak your IOS device, you remove any security mechanisms from Apple. In addition, many apps prohibit you from using their software on a jailbroken device. The Sparkasse app, for example, can no longer be launched on a jailbroken device. Of course, there are workarounds for this, but they do not always work or work with every app.

Battery Life
Unfortunately, a jailbreak often puts more strain on the battery. Especially if you install a lot of tweaks, it affects the battery life. For me, this is one of the most important points to know if you want to jailbreak your device.

Rebooting?
Every time you reboot your jailbroken device, the jailbreak is gone. With the Unc0ver jailbreak, you can easily jailbreak your device again, no matter where you are. However, if you are jailbroken via checkra1n, you will need a computer, otherwise, you will not be able to jailbreak your device again.

Conclusion
Everyone must decide for themselves whether they want to jailbreak their device. Personally, it’s nothing to me on my main device because I want to use banking apps without restriction and don’t want to take any security risk. I have a second device jailbroken. Jailbreaking is just awesome in my opinion.
